dressed by the lights, on a cold November night
she steps slowly to the mic
her breath pulsing through the crowd
she looks around at the tables and chairs
filled with brown and blue stares
each with tales of despair and hope
they all want a song to call their own

not everyone can shine bright and strong on their own
but together they sure give off light
bringing life to the side streets with each constellation that forms
they’re the stars of the city each night

she could be from Brooklyn or Jersey
LA or Calgary
really, anywhere around
from town to town, a few notes and some chords
and a ’92 Ford paint the evenings with colors anew
in her heart, mind and voice it’s all she knows how to do
